How to import a route
Wouldn’t it be great to have all your unique trips and journeys on one map to share with friends, family and guests? Read on and learn more. It doesn’t matter if you want to create a tour of your favorite bars in town, map secret beautiful places near your house, plan a journey for your next travels, create custom bike routes, dog paths, or routes for mothers with strollers… Let your imagination run wild. This tool is very flexible and has a wide usage. Here is an example:
How do I add a route?
- Create a custom route directly on your map.
- Register on mapotic.com and create a map
- Create a category for the routes (all places and routes must be placed in a category)
- Create a route here https://www.google.com/mymaps (you need a Gmail account)
- Export routes from Google Maps or Mapy.cz in KML/KMZ format
- Import the file with routes through Mapotic
Adding Categories For The Route
The category should be set before the route is created. More about categories here.
Examples of route categories and usage:
- Race map: section 1, section 2, section 3, …
- Winter piste map: easy piste, medium piste, hard piste,…
- Map of the hotel surroundings: cycling, hiking trails, wine cellars tour, …
- Cycling map: up to 5km, up to 10km, up to 15km,…
- Trip map: day 1, day 2, day 3,…
Let’s create a simple thematic map of running paths. First, we design the route. Then afterwards, we can add some points of interest along the way. In our example, we have the categories “3 Mile Run”, “5 Mile Run”, and “10 Mile Run”.
How To Add The Path
- Open your www.google.com/mymaps page and sign in with your Gmail account.
- Click on “Create New Map”. You can add custom routes in this new map.
- Click on ‘Add layer’ and name the layer (‘Untitled layer’) with the same name as the category on your Mapotic map. In this case, “3 mile run, 5 mile run, 10 mile run”.
- To draw a custom route, it is most convenient to use a simple line (“Add line or shape”), which can also lead through a landscape where the path is not marked.
- Zoom in on the map and find the location where you want your route to begin (you can use the search bar).
- Create a route by clicking on the map.
- Once you are satisfied with your route, you can save it by double-clicking on the map. You can name the route, which will be used on our map on Mapotic (this can be changed later on).
- In the left menu, you will see an overview of the layers and routes on this map. If you want to create a route with a different category, you can simply add a new layer to the map (“add layer”) and repeat the process.
How To Export The Route
Expand the menu and click on “Export to KML/KMZ”. Save it as a KML file on your computer.
How To Import The Route
- Open the administration section of your map on Mapotic. Go to ‘Import/export’ -> ‘Import’ and click on ‘New import’. A form for importing files will open where you can upload your KML file saved from Google My Maps.
- In this example the import sections are ‘name’ and ‘category’, therefor you can select ‘do not import’ for the remaining cells.
- Click on “verify import”. If everything is fine, your routes will be imported. There may be an error described in the error message (usually this refers to the difference between the category name on your map and the category name in your imported data).
Perfect, you are done! Now you can play with your map. You can change the image, title, and description by clicking on the route. You can add different points of interest along the way.
